Adoption

My family and I adopted Gem from a local animal protective league by our house.  I know that if I am ever to get another pet, that I will be sure to adopt them from a shelter or a protective league.  I think it is great when people adopt pets that need to be rescued.  It is very important for people to know about adopting pets and the benefits they will gain from their new friend.  I make it known to my family and friends that if they want to get a pet, that they should adopt and rescue an animal in need.

In the winter months it is even worse for animals, they are out on the streets and they have no place to go.  They are usually very cold and malnourished.  If more people stop and realize about all of the homeless animals out there, then they should know that it is a good idea to rescue them and give them a home.  Many people encourage this and I do as well.  Being able to say that I have rescued my pet is a good feeling and I know that I have done a good thing and helped her.  It was one of the best decisions that my family and I made.

Cats Know Best

While I am away at school, my cat tends to sleep with my parents in their bed.  As soon as I come home for breaks, Gem knows that I have been gone and so she will sleep with me until I leave again.  Cats are so smart and they sense when they know one of their owners has been gone for a while.  As soon as their owners come home, cats usually do not leave their owner's side because they have missed them and do not want them to leave again.  I love when I get to go home and my kitty stays by my side the whole time.

I had recently talked to the Area Coordinator for Kelley/Patton whose cat I babysit for when she is away.  She told me that when she had been away for four days and came back, her kitty would not leave her side and jumped on her should and slept by her face every night for a whole week.  That just shows that cats have feelings and miss their owners when they are not around.  It also shows that they have a sense where they know when someone has been missing for a period of time.

Winter Time

Cats are usually very cold in the winter just like humans.  My cat likes to cuddle with me and my family members in our beds.  When she is not cuddling with us, she likes to go and sit by the heaters or usually curls up in the corner of our couches.  Even though cats have a lot of fur and get their winter coats, they still get pretty cold when it is cold outside.  Cats usually will sleep a lot more when they are cold because even though they require a lot of sleep regularly, they tend to sleep more in the winter because it keeps them warmer.

When you feel like you just want to cuddle and be warm when it is cold outside, the perfect cuddle buddy is your kitty.  Not only will they keep you warm, but you will keep them warm and they will love it.  It is also very good bonding time with your feline friend.  Cats usually like to be cuddled with, but if you have a cat that is not very affectionate, it makes it harder for them to cuddle.  Make sure you know how your cat is before cuddling with them because they may end up getting with you!

Nap Time

Cat require a lot of sleep, a lot more than humans.  Cats will sleep for the majority of the day and only get up when they want food or have to go to the bathroom.  Kittens will be more playful than older cats and sleep less, but once your cat gets to an older age they will sleep a lot more than they did when they were younger.  You will find your cats usually eat, go to the bathroom and then finally take a nap once they are done.  Sometimes I get mad when my cat is sleeping all of the time and I just want to play with her.  I can't do much about it though because I know she needs her sleep.

You will find that your cat may be very energetic one second and then the next second they are dead asleep in the middle of the floor.  I think that cats require a lot more sleep than dogs do, I am not sure why they need so much sleep but if they need it, no one should bother them when they are sleeping.  If you wake up your kitty, they may just go right back to sleep and not wake up for aa while.  Make sure you allow your cat at least fifteen hours of sleep a day or you may have a groggy kitty.

Taking Care of Your Cat

It is very important to make sure you take good care of your cat.  Cats need love and attention along with the proper nutrition and grooming.  As a cat owner, you should make sure you spend a lot of time with your felines, it is important they get enough attention so they do not feel neglected.  It is also important to talk with your cat's vet and find out which food is the right kind for your cat's weight and other things that factor into their health.  It is also important to make sure that you brush your cat at least once a week to get all of the knots and extra fur that may collect after a long week.

Getting your cats spade and neutered is another important factor when it comes to taking care of your cat.  A lot of cats usually end up being on the streets so it is important to get your cats fixed to help the overpopulation of cats that is always happening.  By all means if you want your cats to have more kittens then go for it, just make sure the kittens have a home and are well taken care of.  These basic essentials are vital when it comes to making sure you provide your cat with the best things possible for a happy and long life.

Cats are Just as Smart as Dogs

A lot of people think that cats are not very smart and a lot of people do not even like cats.  Most people prefer dogs over cats, me on the other hand, I absolutely love cats and will probably be an old cat lady when I am old.  Many people think that cats are mean and do not like to interact with humans.  The truth is, if you spend time with your cat and give it love and attention, then cats can be just as friendly and open as dogs are.  It all depends on how you take care of your cat and how much time you spend with them.

When I first got my cat Gem, I wanted to teach her how to give me her paw.  Most people would think that was a crazy idea.  The truth is, anything can be possible with cats and cats can learn anything they put their minds to.  When Gem was just a kitten, I spent a lot of time with her and would constantly lift her paw up when I would give her treats.  Eventually, Gem would automatically lift and give me her paw when I would put a treat in front of her.  This proves that cats can be taught anything as long as they have time and practice and they are loved by their owners.

Persian Breed

The Persian breed of cats is another one of my favorites.  The Persian is a longhaired cat, with a round face and has a scrunched up face and flatter nose than regular breeds of cats.  This type of breed can be stubborn at times, it all depends on how you raise your Persian.  Their fur is usually very thick and long and takes a lot of time to care for.  I think the Persian breed is very adorable and I would love to own one day.

One of the cats I catsit for over the summer is the Persian breed.  Her name is Jazmone and she is very shy and timid until she gets to know you.  At first, she did not like to come out and play when I first met her.  Once she got comfortable with me and warmed up to me, she came out from hiding and was very friendly towards me.  Taking care of Jazmone and getting to know the Persian breed better, made me realize that someday I would like to own a Persian cat.

CatSitting

Over the summer time, a lady my mother works with goes away on vacation for two weeks.  My mother told her that I really like cats and would not mind watching her five cats that she has for the time that she is away on vacation.  So I met the lady and her five cats and immediately fell in love with all of them.  Nancy, the lady my mom works with, really liked me and knew that  I would take good care of her cats.  I would go over to her house every day and feed the cats, play with them, and change their littler boxes.  I grew to fall in love with them and did not want to stop going over to see them.

My mom and Nancy have already talked and I plan on watching the five cats again this summer.  I do not even see it as being a job because I love them so much and they are so fun to play with.  The cats are so playful and I really like the persian cat, Jazmone, that Nancy has. I am really thankful that Nancy trusts me with her five cats and that she allows for me to watch them while she is on her vacation.  I would not hesitate ever to watch someone's cats for them no matter what!

Maine Coon Breed

I absolutely love cats and learning about all of the different types of breeds that are out there of cats.  I have recently found out that there is a certain type of breed that has huge, furry tails and that can become fairly long in length as they grow older. This type of breed is known as the Maine Coon breed.  The Maine Coon breed is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America and is specifically native to the state of Maine.

Male Main Coon cats can weigh between 15 and 25 pounds and females can weigh between 10 and 15 pounds.  Adult Maine Coon cats can reach a height of 10 to 16 inches and lengths of up to 40 inches.  These cats are pretty unique and one of the biggest breeds of cats out there.  When the Maine Coon cat is young, it may not be that noticeable that they are going to be a very big size with very furry and fluffy tails that are just out of this world.  Maine Coon cats are not very cheap in price either, some of them can cost up to $1000!  This breed is a very nice breed to own.

I had not known that much about this breed until recently and once I found out about them, I wanted to find out as much as possible to learn more about them.  I think that this breed is such an amazing and unique breed and I would really like to own one when I am older. If I really enjoy the Maine Coon breed, maybe one day I will breed them to make some money as well.

Choosing the Perfect Match

About eight years ago, my mom and I wanted to get a kitty because we both love cats very much and wanted a cat to add to our family.  We went to a local animal rescue shelter by our home and browsed all of the kitties that they had.  There were a lot to choose from because at that time it was right before Christmas and the shelter picked up a lot of cats from the cold weather.  We browsed and browsed and wanted to be sure that we would pick the right one.  Picking a cat is not just some easy task, it takes time and there has to be a feeling there that you know you are making the right choice.

As we were looking and petting all of the kittens that were there to choose from, I finally saw a kitten that caught my attention.  It was funny though, because she was in the back of her cage sitting in her litter box.  Somehow she caught my eye and I immediately wanted to take her into the play room they had.  Her coloring was very unique, she was somewhat calico and tiger mixed together and had beautiful fur.  Her name was Gem and we took her into the play room where she was quite shy but I just had a feeling that she would be perfect for our family.  My mom and I decided to adopt her and take her home.

When we got home, Gem decided to hide under my bed and would not come out for a few days.  I started to worry that she would never socialize with the family.  After the few days though, Gem finally came out and she has been a loving and playful cat ever since.  We spoil her very much and she is pretty much the queen of the house.  I love her very much and I do not know what I would do without her, now that I am at school I miss her and look forward to going home and seeing her.  I do not think she will be a cat that I will ever forget, she has a special place in all of my family member's hearts and mine.
